Dog Urine Damage to Carpet Backing – Shropshire Case Study

Quick summary:
Persistent urine odours are rarely just a surface issue. In this case, contamination had worked its way through the carpet, into the backing, underlay and subfloor — something standard cleaning simply won’t resolve.
The original problem
We were asked to attend a property in Shropshire to inspect a carpet affected by ongoing urine odour. The customer had cats that had repeatedly urinated along two walls in a large lounge diner. They had already tried various DIY cleaning products and online remedies, but despite this, the smell remained.
On inspection, using a moisture meter, we checked deeper into the carpet structure — not just the surface fibres. Much of the carpet was still sodden with moisture from previous cleaning attempts, and contamination had travelled through into the backing and underlay. At this point, it was clear that surface cleaning alone would never resolve the issue.
What we found when we returned
We returned around a month later to carry out the work. Before starting, we rechecked the carpet with a moisture meter and found it was still as wet as it had been during the initial inspection.
Once lifted, the carpet backing showed clear signs of damage from urine and prolonged moisture, and the underlay beneath was heavily contaminated and saturated with urine.

The work carried out
The affected areas were first treated from the face with a urine neutraliser, flooding the area to allow it to penetrate through into the backing.
The carpet backing was then further treated and extracted to remove contamination and moisture

All contaminated underlay was removed and replaced. The subfloor was treated where required, and new underlay installed before the carpet was re-laid.

Outcome
Once the contaminated materials had been removed and the backing properly treated and dried, the carpet was re-laid and the full room cleaned to blend the finish.

This ensured not just a clean appearance, but that the underlying cause of the odour had been properly dealt with. This type of problem is very common where urine contamination has been left untreated or repeatedly re-wet through DIY cleaning attempts.
We carry out specialist urine treatment and carpet inspections across Telford, Shrewsbury and the wider Shropshire area.
